Woodstocker Books

About

Woodstocker Books was started by the late Arthur Schwartz in the mid-1990's to distribute museum and specialty interest publications. Arthur's travels had taken him to museums around the world and the company has distributed for institutions in Scotland, Australia and the U.S.

The firm's museum book specialty started when the then-head of publications for Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum tracked Arthur down at a  book exposition. He had  heard "he was a very honest man." Everyone who ever had dealings with him found him to be scrupulous in the conduct of business, and he was the sort of gentleman that is a rare commodity in the marketplace.

Previously, Arthur had had a hand in 're-crafting'   the craft book category for acceptance into general book stores -- -re-branding them so as not be to considered inexpensive  'how-to books' solely for craft outlets. He distributed publications on art materials, calligraphy, and a variety of needlework and textile subjects.  Before that, he had innovated in the creation of educational posters for museums such as New York's Museum of Natural History.

Operation of the firm was taken over by his wife, Jo Yanow-Schwartz, on his passing in 2010. One of the titles added to the line is Treasure of Watchdog Mountain: The Story of a Mountain in the Catskills, a sophisticated children's book about the mountain at the top of the hill where the company is based. The website includes hard-to-find titles which are felt to be of interest to a broad base of our constituency.
