With its bold Ninagawa Mika photograph of two fuchsia-haired Japanese twins on black and fuchsia edged pages, this stunning 283-page book is a celebration of one of the world's most creative, dynamic, and fascinating cities: Tokyo (formerly Edo). It spans 400 years and features over 100 photographers, graphic designers and artists of various media. The publisher, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, has a longstanding link with Japan from the museum's earliest days to the present - both the Emperor and Empress of Japan were former students at Oxford.

Tokyo Art & Photography looks at a city which has undergone constant destruction and renewal, telling the stories of the people who have made Tokyo so famous with their insatiable appetite for the new and innovative - from the age of the samurai to today's avant-garde artists.

Highlights of artists and eras include ukiyo-e from the Edo period, the woodblock paintings of Hiroshige and Hokusai, modern woodblock prints, scrolls, screens, Kano school paintings; maps; Tokyo Pop Art posters, the photography of Hosoe Eikoh, Ninagawa Mika, video of Koizumi Meiro, the collective happenings of Chim Pom, contemporary art by Murakami Takashi and Aida Makato; film, and manga.

The chapter Tokyo Pop in New York begins in the mid-60s to early 70s with the inspiration of American Pop. Tokyo artists and graphic designers creating in the Pop style include Shino Ushio who developed 'imitation art' - a take-off on works by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Graphic designers Tanaami, Yokoo, and others were particularly successful. The Museum of Modern Art was instrumental in fostering Tokyo Pop in New York, as was a smash exhibition at Japan Society. The International Center of Photography in New York exhibited Tokyo photographers including Miyako Ishiuchi.

The spirit of innovation evident in the vibrant cover and book design and the many statements from the artists and photographers themselves, take 'exhibition publication' to a new level.

End papers and the frontispiece juxtapose ukiyo-e prints-with contemporary photographs, make this publication something to be both treasured and displayed in one's home, at libraries, museums, everywhere where the love of art and photography are found.
